The Second Term of the 25-26 school year at South Lee Educate Together is coming to a close.
We had a really fun and exciting term that included lots of moments of fun mixed in with a good
bit of hard work. Our term kicked off with a trip to Presentation Secondary School in
Ballyphehane for their Action Day, where students got a chance to experience some of how a
day in the life of a secondary school might feel.

In maths, we continued practice with long division concepts and multiplication. However, we
started working on decimals within these calculations which added an extra level and challenge
to our work. A big part of our maths work was also building up conceptual knowledge of place
value which is essential to working with decimals. We extended our practice to all kinds of
rational numbers and worked on comparing and converting fractions with percentages and
decimals (and vice versa). We also worked on adding and subtracting mixed numbers, became
familiar with calculators, and introduced the concept of area.

In addition to our standard work in literacy with weekly comprehension and vocabulary
concepts, we also wrote poems this term! We were very proud of the final products of our
careful proofreading and revisions along the way. We had some fun linking our poetry writing
with music lessons on hip hop where we learned a little about the history of the genre,
workshopped finding the rhythm, listened to some classic tunes, and even did a bit of dancing!
We had so much fun in Gaeilge this term too, especially i rith Seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhí
sceitimíní ar na páistí. D’imríomar cluichí go leor agus rinneamar ár gCéilí Mór. Bhí sé iontach
cloisteáil go raibh Gaeilge á labhairt ag gach duine. Rinne siad iarracht mhór!
We also began a new unit in science! After concluding our studies of space and our place in the
wider universe, we have now zoomed in to life on earth. We began some activities about the life
cycle and food chains, and we learned about “decomposers” and their essential roles in our
ecosystems.

I am trying to think if there was anything else exciting this term, but I am pretty much drawing a
blank…

Oh yeah, that’s right! After months of preparations, we finally hit the stage for our school
performance of Matilda. 5th class had starring roles on Monday evening under the bright lights,
but there were plenty of star performances in the shadows behind the scenes as we all did our
best to support each other and build confidence as a group leading up to the show. I could not
be prouder of this group for their composure throughout a difficult period where school routines
were often unpredictable. They navigated sudden changes in our schedule with grace, and
finished a tricky term with a flourish this week. Maith thú, a rang a cúig!
