October Learning in First Class

The month of October has been a very busy month for the children in First Class. We have had the absolute pleasure of welcoming another teacher to our class for a number of weeks. Teacher Aoife has joined our class for a number of weeks where she has been team teaching with me. Aoife has prepared wonderfully exciting lessons for the children to engage in and it has been so much fun having two teachers to share all the hilarious questions that the children ask every day!

This month in maths we have been exploring 2D shapes and pictograms. The children have had lots of fun making shapes and collecting data to create pictograms.

In English the children have been learning different digraphs. Digraphs are when two letters make one sound. The children have been learning about digraphs that are spelt differently but make the same sounds e.g. ‘ai’, ‘ay’ and ‘a_e’. The children have a silly sentence to remember and differentiate between the different digraphs like ‘snail in the rain’, ‘may I play?’ and ‘make a cake’.

We have also had a variety of lessons across a number of subjects based on Halloween this month. We explored the history of Halloween and the history of Halloween traditions. We read books about witches and dragons. We made scary witches using 2D shapes and we had a whole month of art that was based on the theme of Halloween. The children have really enjoyed making skeletons out of cotton buds, creating pumpkins in the style of Yayoi Kusama, making Halloween items using collage and crafting pumpkins out of clay. It has been a fabulously spooky month for all involved!

Please come back again next month to hear all about our November learning!

Many Thanks,

Caitríona
